We are creating our orchard on the farm in Wood Street Village, near Guildford, Surrey.
We’re planting vintage cider apples, bittersweet and bittersharp, including Harry Masters Jersey, Yarlington Mill, Dabinett, and Foxwhelp. These have high tannins to produce a satifyingly complex and refreshing cider.
We’ve planted on MM111 rootstock. This rootstock produces vigorous trees, which will grow to an impressive four metres tall. They are tolerant of both flooding and drought, important for a changing climate. These trees are growing slowly. The orchard is a long-term project! We’ve picked our first harvest from the trees planted three years ago. It will be another four or five years until we get a full crop.
We are also lucky to have two mature apple trees that predate us on the farm: A Lord Derby and a Claygate Pearmain. Lord Derby is a good cooking apple, Claygate Pearmain is a russet dessert apple and local Surrey variety.
While our own orchard is establishing we also pick apples from other local orchards within ten miles of us.
